Day 1: Arrive in Melbourne
Arrive in Melbourne and make your way to your hotel in the city.
Your rental car will be dropped off to your hotel and you are ready to depart on a scenic journey along Victoria’s Great Ocean Road. Visit the Werribee Park Open Range Zoo; explore Geelong and its historic waterfront, a lively area filled with restaurants and cafes. Take a stroll on some of Australia’s best surf beaches, including famous Bells beach, explore the township of Lorne – an ideal place to stop for lunch. The road winds along the coastline to Apollo Bay, a town on the edge of the Ottway ranges and your accommodation for this evening.
On departing Apollo Bay, you will head west on the Great Ocean Road to the Twelve Apostles, ancient limestone stacks that rise from the ocean. Discover more about Australian Maritime history when you explore the town of Port Fairy. The Great Ocean Road hosts a range of historic lighthouses, many open for inspection. Set on the edge of Lady Bay, tonight you rest in Warrnambool, the only city on the Shipwreck Coast, a town full of its own history and worth exploring.
Today you are heading North, away from the coast to the natural beauty of the Grampians mountain range. The Grampians National Park is famous for some of the most spectacular scenery in Australia. Explore the Bushland, walk to cascading waterfalls or lookouts overlooking mountains ranges and impressive rock formations. Along with its natural beauty, Grampians is home to the largest collection of Aboriginal Rock paintings in Victoria. For the more adventurous, try rock climbing or abseiling (guides and equipment are available). Journey on to Halls Gap, close to many of the Grampians major attractions including Boroka and Reed’s Lookouts, McKenzie Falls, Lake Bellfield and Zumsteins.
Leaving the Grampians, you are heading further North towards Ballarat. Towards the Goldfields, explore Stawell, Ararat – a thriving community settled during the gold rush of the 1800’s. Ballarat is one of Victorias largest cities, built with the wealth of the gold rush. Sovereign Hill is definitely worth a visit – and outdoor museum that re-creates a nineteenth century gold rush town. Mingle with the volunteers in period custom that “inhabit” the town as townspeople, miners and soldiers before heading back to the city lights of Melbourne.
