Day 1: Arrive in Melbourne
Arrive in Melbourne and be met by our local representative for a private transfer to your hotel in the city.
Your rental car will be dropped off to your hotel and you are ready to depart on a scenic journey to Victoria’s Mornington Peninsula. Travelling along the south west of Port Phillip Bay, your first stop is a visit to the Werribee Park Open Range Zoo.
Explore Geelong and its historic waterfront. Geelong takes full advantage of its unique north-facing bay with fabulous waterfront eateries, landscaped gardens and walking paths set against the backdrop of Corio Bay.
Queenscliff started as a fishing village then became a fashionable holiday destination. Reminders of Queenscliff’s elegant past are everywhere you look – from imposing Victorian era hotels, a huge military fortress guarding the entrance to Port Phillip, solid old churches and quaint fishermen’s cottages. But there’s more to Queenscliff than nineteenth century history, including art galleries, shops, great places to dine, safe beaches and a tree-lined foreshore.
Take the passenger ferry across the bay to Sorrento and tonight’s accommodation.
Take time this morning to explore Sorrento where beautiful nineteenth-century limestone buildings house excellent eateries, boutiques, galleries and specialist shops. Sorrento offers you great opportunities to surf at ocean beaches, swim with dolphins and seals or take a fishing cruise into the bay.
A small detour to Portsea is worth it for spectacular views from point Nepean over Port Phillip Bay and the ocean; explore the remains of Victoria’s coastal defence at Fort Nepean.
From Portsea, the route turns north back along the coast to Rosebud the crosses to the other side of the Peninsula, arriving at Cape Schanck. Follow boardwalks to lookouts and superb views of the roaring Bass Strait or take a guided tour of the historic Cape Schanck Lighthouse. Continue your journey to the charming nineteenth-century fishing hamlet of Flinders. Flinders offers surf & safe beaches, delicious dining and antique and curio shopping. If you play golf, make time for a round of golf at the scenic Flinders Golf Course overlooking the Bass Strait. Continue your Journey towards Arthurs Seat where you take in exceptional views that extend from the bay to the city. On to Red Hill, Merricks and Main Ridge where the scenery comprises vineyards, orchards and small farms. Dozens of fabulous wineries offer cellar door tastings and many also have fine restaurants open for lunch, such as Max’s at Red Hill or the restaurant among the olive groves at Montalto.
This area is lovely, if you would like to spend more time, ask us to arrange accommodation!
No? Then from here you return to Melbourne via Hastings, an historic fishing town which is a good place to take a fishing charter or a cruise of Western Port Bay.
