Day 1: Arrive in Adelaide
Arrive at Adelaide Airport and make your way to the Avis Car Rental desk, to collect your hire car for the first leg of your Road & Rail adventure. There will be a map in the car, or set your GPS (if booked) and head into the city to your hotel for this evening.
Today you will explore Adelaide using your Adelaide Attractions Pass – just some of the attractions you can visit include Central Market (Open Tuesday, Thursday, Friday, Saturday), Haigh’s Chocolates Visitors Centre, Adelaide Oval and the Bradman Collection. Hang on to that pass – it is valid for five days! Shop in Rundle Mall, drive out to Glenelg to enjoy beach side entertainment, take a jet boat ride or swim with dolphins. There is plenty to see and do in Adelaide!
Head south through the Fleurieu Peninsula to Cape Jarvis where you will board the SeaLink ferry for your 45 minute crossing to Kangaroo Island. Visit Seal Bay and experience a breeding colony of Australian Sea Lions, Flinders Chase National Park, Remarkable Rocks and Admiral’s Arch Boardwalk. Tonight you relax in the hospitality of the Aurora Ozone Hotel.
Today you return to Adelaide, en-route, explore the Adelaide Hills region – exploring Cleland Wildlife Park, take in the views from Mt Loft Summit or explore the historic village of Hahndorf with its many craft and local produce stores. Return to Adelaide for a relaxing evening at one of the many fabulous restaurants.
Now let the train driver do all the work while you relax in comfort on **The Ghan, heading to Alice Springs. For the next two days, you enjoy the changing vista as you journey through two states. Keep any eye out for the Australian wildlife.
Day 6: Arrive in Alice Springs
On arrival in Alice Springs, you will be met for your transfer to the Avis Depot to pick up your hire car. The train arrives in Alice Springs in the early afternoon so you have time to explore. We suggest heading up Anzac Hill for a great scenic look across the Township of Alice Springs and the McDonnell Ranges, an awesome rock formation. Start exploring - Olive Grove Botanical Gardens, Alice Springs Desert Park, home to more than 400 animals and 120 species of plants and is a must see. Visit Alice Springs School of Air Visitor Centre – the largest classroom in the world. Alice Springs Telegraph Station – the birth place of Alice Springs. Or, Araluen Centre for the art, culture and history of Central Australia in one place.
There’s more! Heading further afield today, running along the MacDonnell Ranges to visit Standley Chasm, Ellery Creek Big Hole, Ormiston Gorge and Hermannsburg – birthplace of Albert Namitjira and Aboriginal fine art. Glen Helen Resort is nestled in the stunning West MacDonnell Ranges, a great place to enjoy lunch overlooking the ranges. At times there is water for you to enjoy a swim in a number of water holes.
It’s an early morning, but worthwhile for the Outback Ballooning experience! Enjoy Alice Springs from the air in the peaceful morning air. After a sumptuous breakfast in the Australian Outback, return to your hotel. Time to freshen up then check out from the hotel.
Your arrangements conclude with the return of your rental car to the airport or depot.
